The Sound of Music
Grade: A 07/25/2014
As I was growing up, there was one VHS tape that got played more than any other. That was a tape with THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER followed by THE SOUND OF MUSIC. My sister and I watched it all the time. On one level, it can entertain young children with its joyous attitude and beautiful music. However, it wasn't until I was older that I understood anything about the convent, the Nazis, the Hitler youth, or the Von Trapp escape to Austria. Regardless of the music, which is superb, this film...masterfully directed by Robert Wise...is an epic in every sense of the word. It is a thorough, heartfelt story that has both the pure joy of innocence and the disgusting wretchedness of the worst of our history. From the very first helicopter shot that swoops in on the bright smile of Julie Andrews, you know you are in for a great film.
