Brokeback Mountain
Grade: A 07/23/2014
Just as films about slavery or the civil rights movement can inspire "White Guilt", this movie has the effect of inspiring "Straight Guilt". That is not to say that this film is exhibitionist or gimmicky...far from it. This film is as beautiful and heartfelt a love story as you could imagine...but as you watch the unrealized love, the inner struggles, and the oppression (both self-imposed and external), you can't help but be ashamed of being part of a society that would not allow these two men to be together comfortably. So well acted, so well filmed, and so delicately handled that as the closing moments unfold, the tears are completely unavoidable.
